Automation Helps Human Beings to Achieve Dizzying Heights of Prosperity

My friend is a software engineer. He is fixed bugs and tests software. He told me his company is actively trying to create programs to test software so he and his fellow programmers can be free to creatively explore new ways to improve the efficiency and output of the company. Why would they be purposely trying to replace themselves with machines? It seems counterintuitive and counterproductive.

For time immemorial technology and machines have supplanted backbreaking human labor and made it incalculably more productive. Just 100 years ago human beings struggled to support a little over a billion people on Earth. With successful automation we are currently able to comfortably support 7.7 billion human souls. This speaks to the unmistakable success in humans to master their environment such that we are thriving in ways it was scarcely conceivable 100 years ago.

Many Luddites and proponents of the green eco movement view technology, automation, and by extension human beings as being a bane on planet Earth. We are living during the safest, cleanest, and most luxurious time in human history, thanks in large part to human ingenuity. It is not about creating or destroying jobs, rather it is about creating or destroying wealth. Only freethinking and creative human beings could produce such miracles. Do not mutilate the hand that feeds you.

Specialization makes us Wealthier than the Kings and Emperors of Antiquity

“Maybe you would benefit to learn about how to grow your own food rather than being grateful you don’t have to think about it.”

One of the miracles of the modern economy is that of specialization. One is able to focus on working and producing in the field one is most competent. When millions of people are able to freely choose which field to specialize in, the result is the creation of wealth of monumental proportions. The result of the vast reduction of poverty and the stratospherical rise in standards of living as goods and services become cheap and affordable. Competition pushes down price and elevates quality. The primary benefactor of this magnificent phenomenon is the poor and destitute.

It is a blessing that we don’t have to grow our own food, sew our own clothes, chop wood to heat our own homes, and construct our own homes. Rather we are now able to work in a field of our choosing and with the value we earn, AKA currency, purchase the goods/services that are the expertise of others. This is a system that has produced a civilization that towers above all others of wealth, comfort, and leisure.

The beautiful and ironic thing is we now have so much leisure that we can afford to spend time criticizing the very system that has gifted us all of these miracles. We can choose to grow food because it teaches kids valuable skills about farming and where food comes from, rather than being forced to do so lest we starve. We can choose to sew our own clothes because it teaches kids valuable lessons about appreciating clothing and learning to mend torn clothing to save currency, rather than being forced to do so lest we go naked. We can choose to chop wood to supplement standard indoor heating and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of exercise, rather than being forced to do so lest we freeze. We can learn how to make additions on our homes because it saves currency and teaches kids about being a handyman, rather than being forced to do so lest we lack a shelter.

We have the choice to be self sufficient rather than being compelled to do so in order to survive. That is the miracle of the modern industrialized economy. The comfort and wealth we daily enjoy and take for granted would make the kings and emperors of antiquity green with envy.

Specialization makes us Wealthier than the Kings and Emperors of Antiquity – Steemit

Specialization is the Essence of Civilization

It is the goal of many people to be self sufficient; to grow their own food, catch rain water, filter their own water, raise their own livestock, knit/sew their own clothes, build their own homes etc. While these are admirable and noble goals to gain independence and expand one’s skill set, they are not necessary. Indeed they are actually counter productive to the growth of a thriving market economy. As the economy grows through free trade and technology becomes more intricate, new jobs are created to service and maintain that new technology in order to meet that swelling demand. In response to a growing demand for more specialized goods and services, enterprising entrepreneurs rise to meet that demand with gusto. This is the origin of the elusive new jobs that politicians enthusiastically lust after with the sophistry that spews from their mouths.

This principle is true on the individual level as it is true on the regional or geographical level. The region known as NY is ideal for growing apples. The region known as Georgia is ideal for growing peaches. The region known as Mexico is ideal for growing avocados. Due to the magnificence of free trade, people living in the NY region can enjoy avocados and peaches, people living in the Georgia region can enjoy avocados and apples, and people living in the Mexico region can enjoy apples and peaches. It may be possible for people living in the NY region to grow avocados and peaches but this would come at considerable cost and effort. This would an inefficient use of resources and would be quite unsustainable. It is far more efficient for farmers in NY to focus on growing that which comes easiest and then to trade for that which is more difficult to grow. This is the principle of specialization at the regional or geographical level.

This free trade increases standards of living and makes us all wealthier.  As traveling technology has improved by leaps and bounds this has expanded the reach of markets to satisfy demands in distant lands. As the Internet has grown and developed this has obliterated borders and rendered nation States irrelevant and antiquated. The more we trade with our brothers and sisters all over the globe the less need we have for opportunistic political predators who seek only to divide and vex us with their inflammatory rhetoric. It is the bureaucratic parasite that is wholly dependent on the industrious host for its subsistence. We need only acknowledge our independence of the State and its existence will pass away into oblivion. Vacate the State!

When goods don’t cross borders, soldiers will.

Frederic Bastiat, 19th century French economist and author

Herein we discuss how he became a Voluntaryist, striking at the root, Statism starts in childhood, relentless pursuit of truth, the genie is out of the bottle, decentralization of everything, how I started my podcast and YouTube channel, critics of the status quo are no longer burned at the stake, banning books in 2015, government school disincentivizes learning, information is available for free online, interesting guests, Most Dangerous Superstition, entrepreneurs make the best Anarchists, salesmen are sleazy myth, division of labor, specialization, the poor today live better than the kings of antiquity, the belief in authority, the Internet breaks down national borders, virtual assistant, rendering the State obsolete, Podcast Blast Off, college/university degrees are increasingly worthless, crippling student loan debt and more!

The free market is not a system. It is not a policy dictated by anyone in particular. It is not something that Washington implements. It does not exist in any legislation, law, bill, regulation, or book. It is what you get when people act on their own, entirely without central direction, and with their own property, and within human associations of their own creation and in their own interest. It is the beauty that emerges in absence of control.
