Halloween Fear and Terror

Halloween is the time of fear and terror. I strain to consider an institution that has caused more worldwide fear and terror than the US Federal Government. The frightful spirit of Halloween is daily felt by many globally that wince when they see a plane flying overhead afraid it will drop a Hellfire missile or by those who tremble when they behold US troops arrive on their soils in Humvees to spread freedom by intimidation, torture, and terrorization.

If you want to strike true bone chilling fear in a man, simply mention the State is sending agents over to pay him a visit. No Halloween costume compares.

Civilization is built on a foundation of compassion, liberty, free trade, and Capitalism. Only when we holster our guns and sheathe our swords can we begin to truly understand and deeply empathize with our neighbors. Only the individual acts. Only the individual reasons. Only the individual loves! Vacate the State!

Columbus Day

Columbus Day is upon us. There will be celebration, merriment, no work for most people, and no government school. What exactly are we celebrating? His “discovery” of a geographic area already populated by an average of 7 million indigenous people? His enslavement of indigenous people to mine for precious metals? His sexual predations of the native women? His forced conversion of the indigenous people to Christianity, a religion that the natives knew nothing about? His complete abandonment of the principles of Christianity? His systematic genocidal eradication of some native peoples to near extinction and some to complete extinction?

His veneration as a conqueror is ironic considering the hundreds of thousands of natives that died at his sadistic hand and that of his compatriots. It is a wretched habit of humans, this idolatry of those who have slaughtered the most humans, destroyed the most unique cultures, laid the most waste to great civilizations of the past, and wantonly obliterated the piecemeal progress and knowledge that has taken generations of hard work, toil, and intellectual struggle to achieve. A fleeting moment of savage brutality can utterly annihilate vital knowledge that would have formed the precious foundation on which thriving industrial economies are built. Do not genuflect before mass murdering genocidal maniacs.

The victors write the history books and the vanquished vanish into the fog of obscurity.

“Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god.”

Jean Rostand

My wife brands me as a Cultural Critic, but I am simply following my thirst for knowledge and passion for writing.

Specialization makes us Wealthier than the Kings and Emperors of Antiquity

“Maybe you would benefit to learn about how to grow your own food rather than being grateful you don’t have to think about it.”

One of the miracles of the modern economy is that of specialization. One is able to focus on working and producing in the field one is most competent. When millions of people are able to freely choose which field to specialize in, the result is the creation of wealth of monumental proportions. The result of the vast reduction of poverty and the stratospherical rise in standards of living as goods and services become cheap and affordable. Competition pushes down price and elevates quality. The primary benefactor of this magnificent phenomenon is the poor and destitute.

It is a blessing that we don’t have to grow our own food, sew our own clothes, chop wood to heat our own homes, and construct our own homes. Rather we are now able to work in a field of our choosing and with the value we earn, AKA currency, purchase the goods/services that are the expertise of others. This is a system that has produced a civilization that towers above all others of wealth, comfort, and leisure.

The beautiful and ironic thing is we now have so much leisure that we can afford to spend time criticizing the very system that has gifted us all of these miracles. We can choose to grow food because it teaches kids valuable skills about farming and where food comes from, rather than being forced to do so lest we starve. We can choose to sew our own clothes because it teaches kids valuable lessons about appreciating clothing and learning to mend torn clothing to save currency, rather than being forced to do so lest we go naked. We can choose to chop wood to supplement standard indoor heating and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of exercise, rather than being forced to do so lest we freeze. We can learn how to make additions on our homes because it saves currency and teaches kids about being a handyman, rather than being forced to do so lest we lack a shelter.

We have the choice to be self sufficient rather than being compelled to do so in order to survive. That is the miracle of the modern industrialized economy. The comfort and wealth we daily enjoy and take for granted would make the kings and emperors of antiquity green with envy.

Profound Gratitude is Necessary for the Miracle of Modern Comforts

A proper gratitude is requisite for the magnificent achievements that have made our modern lives comfortable. Basic modern comforts that even those considered “poor” among us enjoy such as cheap clothes, shoes, decent insulated housing, indoor plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating would undeniably be the envy of kings, pharaohs, and emperors of antiquity.

The advocation that we should not enjoy these and that we should instead seek a primitive and non-impact life is a thoroughly anti-human and anti-life perspective. It is a repudiation of the inconceivable toil and hardship that our ancestors have endured to make our modern comforts possible. It is an insult to their suffering. Let us pay homage to their adversity by striving to continue the miraculous progress for future human beings to enjoy. That human beings live at all is a miracle in itself. Don’t forget to pay it forward.
