The Tragedy of the Commons and State Parks

Those who claim that we need the State to take care of the environment, protect the lakes, streams, rivers, forests, and declare National/State Parks are unconsciously committing various logical fallacies such as the appeal to antiquity, appeal to authority, false dichotomy, and tragedy of the commons.

The tragedy of the commons is the brooch that characterizes all “public property”. It demonstrates how human action is directly affected with an alteration in the incentives. When everyone “owns” a particular piece of land, forest, lake, stream, or river, it is the same as if nobody owns it. When nobody owns something there is no vested interest towards preservation and conservation. Therefore everyone seeks to use that natural resource to its fullest capacity without thought of the future. The tragically inevitable result is waste and plunder until that resource is thoroughly barren and depleted.

Moreover when a natural resource is State owned and considered “public property” it still requires currency and resources to maintain. How can a monopoly on initiated aggression know exactly what is needed to maintain this natural resource when all currency is obtained at the barrel of a gun and there is no competition to establish the price equilibrium? Without allowing for open competition in the Free Market these factors cannot be adequately determined. The result is further waste and inefficiency.

If, however this natural resource becomes privately owned the incentives change dramatically. Some people may choose to homestead it by living there, erecting a home, and starting a family. Other people may respond to the demand for untouched wilderness for the purposes of hiking, camping, backpacking etc. Such wealthy investors might purchase these large swaths of wilderness for the express purpose of maintaining their pristine nature for those who appreciate the natural world. They would be in direct competition with other wilderness owners and indirect competition with any other activity that consumers might elect to do in their spare time. Their incentive would be to care for, ensure future survival, and maintain this natural resource as it is satisfying significant consumer demand. Free Market Capitalism is an elegant solution to a world of infinite desires and scare resources.

Rules Are Discovered Not Created

This Anarchy, Rules Without Rulers, A Couple On A Dinner   Date

We all live in a world of rules from which we cannot escape. This is not a tragedy, but rather a recognition of reality. Do not eat and you will starve. Do not drink and you will dehydrate. Do not respect the self-ownership of other individuals and you will pay the consequences. Do not respect the property rights of others and you will pay the consequences. Use violence to solve your daily problems and your life will come to a swift end. Rules are ubiquitous and omnipresent.

 

What is conspicuously absent is rulers, those individuals who claim an exemption from the laws of universal morality. They believe they can act in the name of the State and by doing so are beyond reproach. Just as the laws of mathematics, physics, and thermodynamics are universally applied to all and recognize no special status, badge, or uniform; so too do the laws of morality make no exception for any individual. When the people hallucinate a small group people to have this magical exemption, this is the prologue to actions of the most egregious human barbarism imaginable.

 

We already live most of our lives in Anarchy. For the most part we make our decisions voluntarily, not because someone told us to. This demonstrates that the large majority of the population act in an anarchic fashion, though they would not readily admit it. If something cannot be done voluntarily it should not be done at all. To say that we need the State to do X because the Free Market is insufficient is to say we need rape because then how would we make babies? Anarchy is all around us! Embrace it unconditionally!

I Am A Slave To My Principles

To Kill Liberty One Must First Kill the Economy, Taxation   Is The Coffin Liberty Defined

With sufficient imagination one can always conjure up the outlandish exception to the rule. I am not interested in satisfying all possible individual scenarios. I am only interested in discovering dependable moral principles on which to base my life. Individual situations must be dealt with given those specific circumstances. It is not my place to think of an answer to all of them.

True freedom is not the recognition that there will be no moral dilemmas, but that those dilemmas will not be given the moral pass that the State or any action that appeals to the State claims to possess. This undoubtedly applies to receiving stolen currency in the form of financial aid or grants from the State. No amount of appeals to pity or appeals to emotion will change the immorality of asking for stolen currency from a monopoly on initiated aggression. It does not matter whom the stolen currency goes to and for what purpose it is used. If a thief steals my currency and then assures me that he will use it for helping his sick grandmother that still would not excuse the violent expropriation of currency AKA theft. It does nothing whatsoever to alter the initial immorality of the act. The ends never justify the means. This is a principle I will never concede. Once the compromise of one’s principles begins it is often the precursor to rationalizing truly monstrous acts.

I will die a slave of principles, not men.

What Is At The Root Of Self-Ownership?

Teach Non-Aggression and Self-Ownership

“What is at the root of self-ownership?”

Self-ownership is the assertion that one is responsible for one’s actions and the direct consequences of one’s actions. This is a both a tautological redundancy and a self-evident statement. If one is to rationally function in the real world one must inherently accept the idea of self-ownership. If I strangle a hobo, it is commonly understood that I get punished and not my hands, as I own my hands and all the actions they perform. Moreover I also must own the death of the hobo as that is the direct result of my actions.

To state “I do not own myself” is to be committing a performative contradiction. One must first claim self-ownership in order to then claim one rejects self-ownership. Furthermore, if one claims to reject self-ownership or that humans do not possess it, who does? That is, who is responsible for the actions of immoral and wicked actions if not the individuals who are committing the actions? God, Mother Nature, the collective, Shiva, Buddha, Jesus Christ? Someone must be held accountable for evil. Diffusion of responsibility is one of the greatest scourges to plague humanity and has allowed for the most horrific atrocities. When everyone is to blame, no one is to blame. The assumption of individual self-ownership is the foundation of a civilized society.

 

Whose property is my body? Probably mine. I so regard it. If I experiment with it, who must be answerable? I, not the State. If I choose injudiciously, does the State die? Oh, no.
